Microneedling Q&A

What kinds of issues can microneedling improve?

Microneedling is a popular treatment because it addresses more than one skin condition at the same time. Some of the issues that bring people in for microneedling include:

  • Acne scarring
  • Enlarged pores
  • Loose or sagging skin
  • Crepey skin texture
  • Skin discoloration
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

Compared with the expense of addressing multiple issues with different treatments, microneedling offers a great return on your investment. Treatments usually take around 30 minutes.

While you can see improvements in the weeks following your initial treatment, it may take a series of treatments spaced out over time to achieve optimal results.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling uses sterile treatment needles to create thousands of tiny punctures into the surface of your skin. A powered treatment handpiece “stamps” the needles into your skin, creating tiny channels.

Your body perceives each of these microchannels as an injury and rushes to launch a healing response. Collagen cell production accelerates, and new blood vessels enhance circulation to the area, which speeds healing.

As your skin develops newly produced collagen, it becomes tighter, smoothing away lines and wrinkles. Areas of hyperpigmentation are dispersed, and skin becomes softer and smoother.

How is PRP used in microneedling?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a solution formulated from a small volume of your own blood. The clotting properties of platelets and special proteins called growth factors to help enhance healing. When applied to the skin during microneedling, PRP penetrates deeply, helping your body create new cells as quickly as possible.

It only takes a few moments to draw a small sample of your blood and create PRP right in the office. Because the solution is made from your own cells, there is no risk of side effects.

Northshore Dermatology also offers radiofrequency microneedling using the Agnes® RF system. Radiofrequency energy passes through the microneedling needles to create heat in the deeper layers of your skin.

This heat accelerates your natural healing response, enhancing results. Microneedling with radiofrequency does not feel much different than having the treatment with no form of energy. You may feel a mild stinging or burning sensation, but there is no significant pain.
