Myth #1-
“The SPF in my makeup is enough”
Wrong! This SPF is an added precaution and is NOT enough to protect your skin. In order to adequately protect your skin from the sun, you should be applying a nickel sized amount to your face and neck before applying your makeup. This layer of protection will stay on your skin throughout the whole day, whereas your foundation will not. If you are worried about SPF making your skin feel greasy or your makeup not setting correctly, use a Matte SPF! Our favorite Matte SPF is the Obagi Matte SPF. We also love the SkinMedica Tinted Total Defense + Repair SPF, which is great to use if you don’t want to wear makeup but still want some coverage and SPF protection. It is never too late to start using a great SPF! Trust us on this one, your skin will thank you.
Myth #2-
“I rarely burn, so I don’t need to wear sunscreen”
Sun Damage does not just mean constant sunburns or freckles. In fact, most of the damage that is caused by the sun cannot be seen on the surface of the skin. The process of premature aging by UV Rays is Photoaging, which is the primary reason that your skin loses collagen and elastin. UV rays can penetrate deep into the dermis and break down collagen and elastin cells, resulting in wrinkles and leathery skin texture, and could even result in cancer. This makes sunscreen your best weapon in your anti aging and cancer prevention. The SkinMedica Total Defense + repair sunscreen can not only protect your skin from further damage, but can also reverse previous damage by using nearby undamaged DNA to repair the damaged DNA. Our Reveal camera can also show you the sun damage that is hiding beneath your skin! Bottom line, everyone should wear sunscreen, regardless of if you burn or not.
Myth #3-
“I just need my ‘base tan’ to prevent sunburns”
Let’s start off by saying a ‘base tan’ is a tan, and a tan is damage to your skin. This is a common excuse that people use to lay out in the sun at the beginning of summer to ‘prevent future burns,’ but it is actually doing more harm than good. Your skin increases its pigment to further protect itself from the sun and further damage, but relying on this alone is the equivalent of using an SPF 3 or 4. Looking into other alternatives like tanning lotions or spray tans will help you achieve your summertime glow without the sun damage.
