Some skin conditions are not life threatening, but can be very hard to ignore for some. If you have ever experienced bumpy skin around your arms and legs, you may be experiencing Keratosis Pilaris. Keratosis Pilaris is a very common, medically harmless skin condition. It makes small bumps appear on the skin in areas like the back of the arms, upper thighs, buttocks, and even cheeks. These bumps do not cause any itchiness or discomfort, but can make it uncomfortable for you to wear skin bearing tops or shorts. If you’ve experienced this, you’re not alone and you don’t have to live with it forever!
There is not one simple cause for KP, but it is considered to be a genetic skin condition. In addition to that, other dry skin conditions like eczema can cause it to arise as well. KP develops when keratin builds up and blocks the opening of a hair follicle. Some people are only affected during the winter months when their skin is dry, but don’t experience it in the summer.
While there’s currently no treatment that will absolutely get rid of KP, you can improve its appearance and symptoms with some TLC—and one of the best things you can do at home is to keep your skin moisturized all the time. To address the roughness and texture, try to exfoliate at least 3 times a week in the affected areas. It’s best to use a chemical exfoliating body wash or body cream that has glycolic acid.
